“Yet no one was speaking openly of Him for fear of the Jews” – John 7:13

A few days ago radical Islamist terrorists carried out an attack on an elderly priest and parishioners in France. They cut the throat of the devoted clergy to cause fear and to deliver the Islamic State’s message that from now on their fresh target is the church. This gutless act is not the first and not the last in the history of the church, but for us Christians in the postmodern era is something new that tests us daily. Cowardice in the bible mentioned more than three dozen times, which throughout thousands of years can define us as people, broken hearted children of God.

Cowardice is a form of sin that feeds itself from fear, from the unknown, from the projected worst case scenario, from negativity. We often rush to make decisions in our lives because of fear. The perpetrators of the church attack in the view of many are cowards, but for many they are soldiers of a cause. What required from us followers of Christ in these trying times is faith in God before we, ourselves become cowards by bending our knees to the enemy and deny the church. Do not feed into cowardice by go with the flow of public opinion, rather listen to the inner voice of your heart, where God speaks to you with Jesus’ voice who knows cowards the most and who is able teach you fight and defeat evil anywhere. Surrender to your blessed savior, be brave and speak openly of Him without fearing anyone or anything.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” – Jeremiah 29:11

In the book, Searching For Happiness by Martin Thielen, the second chapter begins by telling a story of a union soldier of the Civil War, who was shot in the arm and told by his captain before taking his gun away to run behind the battlefield and look for the medic. The private returned after a while and ask for his gun back explaining, he ran in all direction to find the end zone of fighting, but he found raging battle in all direction and no doctor or nurse to help him. The chapter continues to dissect life that spares non from facing fire of constant battling of different kinds. You and I are not created to live free of problems, in fact many times we are like the soldier who is running for cover and aid of the friendly ally, while we realize there is only enemy, destruction and helplessness around us. Our Lord, Jesus Christ was in the same situation, which he did not desire to abandon. He had no plan to survive, no will to recover, but thrive to be one with God and his plan that the Creator and Maker draw out for him that justified all of his efforts that not saved him and sustained him, but lifted him up to the glory of the loving God. Perhaps, there is a message for us to face all evil in the frontline of daily fighting with the courage that comes from God through faith. Let us be the warriors of faith knowing that the Lord is more than a captain or general of an army. He is the supreme judge, the deliverer of life and death, to whom all creation must surrender without ever thinking of looking for cover or a hiding place.

Martin Thielen, A boldogságot keresni című könyvének második fejezete egy rövid történettel kezdődik az amerikai polgárháború idejéből. Az író elmeséli, hogy egy kiskatona, aki az északi hadsereg oldalán harcolt a shilohi csatában, megsebesült a karján, majd a kapitánya azt parancsolta, hogy adja át fegyverét és szaladjon északra, a csatatér mögé a mentő alakulathoz. A honvéd egy bizonyos idő elteltével megjelent felettesénél és kérte vissza a puskáját, miután jelentette, hogy szaladt északra, nyugatra, keletre, de egyik irányba sem találta a csatatér végét, csak a véres küzdelmet. A szerző kitér arra, hogy az élet senkit nem kímél meg az élet különféle borzalmaitól,csatatereitől. Te és én sem szabadulhatunk meg a problémáktól, fájdalmaktól az életben. Mi is mint a kiskatona a történetben, sebzetten rohanunk minden irányba, hogy valahol egy kis nyugalmat, illetve segítséget kapjunk a körülöttünk zajló kegyetlen harcban. Jézus Krisztus is ugyanebben a helyzetben volt, de Ő nem akart hátat fordítani, elmenekülni. Krisztus nem tervezte, hogy túléli a dolgokat, hogy majd megmenekül és újrakezdi valahogyan. Az Úr Jézus szembenézett a véres küzdelemmel azért, hogy felemelkedjen a feladatban Istenhez és eggyé válljon az Atyával, a Teremtővel, akinek terve volt vele és terve van mindnyájunkkal. Ne futamodj meg te sem a megpróbáltatástól, találd meg Isten csodálatos üzenetét életed kegyetlennek tűnő helyzeteiben. Nézz szembe azzal, ami megfélemlít, ami próbára tesz és gondolj odaadással Istenre, aki több, mint a sereg vezére, hiszen az Úr a bíró, az alkotó, rendelkező, akinek hatalma páratlan, akinek kezében van életed és a halálod, az Úr az, akinek mindenkinek meg kell hajolnia, meg kell adnia magát kibúvó nélkül.

1 Timothy 6:6 – “true godliness with contentment is great wealth.”

Did you know that in America there are a growing number of people who consider themselves free of organized religion. According to a recent survey 33% of the residents of San Francisco, 42% of Portland, 32% of Denver, and 33% of Seattle are not affiliated with any faith group. I wonder what these people believe in. Last week I was shocked to see the many people visiting our church building as they played the popular Pokémon Go game on their smart phones. They walked like zombies not looking up from their telephones as they played the game, searching for the fantasy creatures around our church through the small screens of their phones. Once they got it they left with tremendous satisfaction on their faces. What happened to reality? Why cannot people look for happiness and fulfilment in the real source of joy that is faith in God? Will this world ever turn back to God by worship, service and pursue of righteousness? Will people ever find content in faith with gratefulness in their heart for God’s blessings on our earthly lives and for the life that we gained by the death of our wonderful savior, Jesus Christ? My Friend seek God in this life through brotherhood, love, servitude and repentance and you will find godliness, which is the greatest joy there is.

Talán kevesen tudják azt, hogy Amerikában egyre nagyobb számban vannak azok, akik mégha hisznek is valamiben, az egyházi közösségtől teljesen függetlennek vallják magukat. Például egy friss kutatás szerint San Fransiscóban 33%-a a lakosságnak tartja magát távol bármilyen hívő közösségtől. Ez az arány Portlandban 42%, Denverben 32%,Seattleben 33%. Vajon miben hisznek ezek az emberek? Egy rendkívüli dologra lettem figyelmes a múlt héten. Minden nap tucat számra jelentek meg emberek a templomunk előtt okostelefonnal a kezükben. Egy elektromos, fantáziajátékot követtek (Pokemon Go) és mint megszállottak jártak-keltek, kémlelve a templom épületét a telefonuk képernyőjén keresztül. Abban a pillanatban, amikor megtalálták amit a játék által kerestek, elégedett mosollyal az arcukon távoztak. Felmerült a kérdés bennem, hogy mi lett a való világgal, az igazi értékekkel, örömökkel az életben? Hova lett az emberekből a vágy a boldogságra, a közössség építésére az Istenbe vetett hit által? Közeledik-e még valaha az ember alázattal, odaadással ebben a világban Isten felé? Lesznek-e még valaha csoportok, tömegek, akik a templomban a valós, igaz Istent jönnek keresni azért, hogy hálát adjanak életükért a jelenben és leboruljanak szolgálatra készen az Úr előtt az örök életért, amit az Isten szeretetből a Szent Fiát feláldozva nekünk ajándékozott? Imádkozzunk, hogy legyen ilyen kegyességben részünk és nagy nyereségünk a Jóisten által.

Serving the Master - A mestert szolgálni

“The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”- Romans 6:23

Not long ago someone called me to ask for a funeral service for a spouse who stopped coming to our church decades ago and was also converted to another faith, but claimed to have lifetime membership to our church by the parents, whom attended our church regularly in the past. This true encounter is an example of the necessity of living with a clear conscious and connection with God in your life. The church is not country club, where you purchase your way in with money for life, but a place where you belong after you make the choice between serving two masters in your life. Each masters pays with his own kind of currency, one with man made goods, temporary comfort and pleasures of the flesh, the other with eternal life with God, which begins here on earth in the church through Christ for eternity. When you chose your master you must know that you cannot serve both and also that both masters require different commitments from you. One wants you to live in abundance of goods, with the focus only on yourself without any regrets of denying the community. The other asks you to measure up yourself daily to live a simple, loving and giving life with others in regret of all of your sins. Think about the choice that you have made and do not hesitate to turn to God if you think you might be on the side of the wrong master today because the Lord is kind and merciful, who welcomes you to have everlasting life in him, through Jesus Christ.

,,A bűn ára a halál, az Isten kegyelmi ajándéka pedig az örök élet Krisztus Jézusban, a mi Urunkban.” – Rómaiak 6:23

Nem olyan régen valaki felhívott azzal a kéréssel, hogy elhunyt házastársának, aki évtizedekkel ezelőtt járt a templomunkba, de elhagyva a református felekezetet és egy másik vallást vett fel, egyházunk vegyen részt a temtési szertartásában. A telefonáló szerint az elhunytnak a szülei által (akik régen a gyülekezetünkhöz tartoztak) életreszóló tagsága van a templomunknál. Ez az igaz történet egy példa arra, hogy mennyire fontos lenne mindenki számára egyszerű és lelkiismeretes hitéletet élni és Isten gyermekeinek közösségébe tartozni. A gyülekezeti közösség, a templom, nem egy szabadidős klub, ahová az ember pénzzel életreszóló tagságot vásárolhat, hanem egy hely ahová az ember azután tartozik, miután eldöntötte, hogy két mester közül kit szolgál. Mindkét mester mással fizet a szolgálatért. Az egyik az ember által gyártott javakkal, átmeneti örömökkel, a test gyönyöreivel kényeztet, a másik az örök élet reményével, ami itt kezdődik a földön, a templomi közösségben a Jézus Krisztus által. Amikor az ember mestert választ, tudnia kell, hogy két urat nem szolgálhat és, hogy mindkét mester mást vár el a szolgálótól. Az egyik azt, hogy az ember csak magának éljen, ne legyen gondja másokra és lelkiismeretfurdalás nélkül fordítson hátat másoknak. A másik azt kéri, hogy naponta az ember lelkiismeretes életet éljen, hogy másokat vegyen figyelembe, hogy éljen szeretetben, odaadással másokért, bűnbánattal egy templomi közösségben. Te melyik mestert szolgálod? Ne félj Istenhez fordulni, ha úgy gondolod rossz mestert választottál. Az Isten irgalmas, megbocsájt és tárt karokkal vár, hogy neked is örök életed legyen a Jézus Krisztusban.

The Good Deed - A jó cselekedet

“Let us not become weary in doing good.” – Galatians 6:10

In the summer time families take some time off and disconnect for a short time from the pressure of the working days. However, even during the time of relaxation it is important to remain committed to God and to serving the Lord. To live accordingly, I would like to share the thoughts of Margaret Zuckosky, an elder of a Presbyterian congregation that she wrote in a church bulletin many years ago.
To be a member of the church is not something to have, but rather something to be, the most important thing to be. By joining hands with members of the church, I find a richness of spirit that I can never know by isolation. In serving the whole, I find myself becoming whole again. I no longer separate my spirit, God and the church, because they all flow together. God’s love for me sustains and anchors me during life’s complexities. It is His love which empowers me to touch the hearts of others. My love for God is the foundation of all that I do and all that I am. By giving our time, talents and financial resources to the church, the lives that we touch help create a more Christ-like community. I can imagine a world and all its beauties where once everyone embraces Christ.

,,A jó cselekedetben pedig ne fáradjunk el ” – Galatákhoz 6:9

A nyári hónapokban, amikor a családok egy rövid időre szabadságra mennek és kikapcsolódnak az év kimerítő terhei alól, a hitélet nem áll meg. A kikapcsolódás ideje alatt is fontos kell legyen számunkra az Úr és a szolgálat, a jó cselekedet, ami nem lehet fárasztó, sokkal inkább frissítő a hívő számára. Erről tanúskodik egy presbitáriánus testvér is, Zuckosky Margaret is, akinek gondolatai egy vasárnapi egyházi hirdetőben jelent meg évekkel ezelőtt.
Az egyháztagság az nem valami, amit az ember birtokol, hanem inkább egy identitás, a legfontosabb dolog, ami jellemzi a keresztyén embert, az Istenhez tartozás. A gyülekezethez tartozni a Szentlélek áldása, ami gazdaggá tesz és amit a templomi közösségen kívül lehetetlen megtapasztalni. Mindenki felé odaadással, jó szándékkal fordulok, ami kiegészíti életem és újra és újra egésszé varázsol. A jó cselekedet által a szürke hétköznap is üneppé válik, úgy mint a vasárnap, amikor az ember a templomban lelkileg feltöltődik. Átérzem Isten szeretetét, ami szilárd talajt biztosít számomra és életben tart az élet különböző, bonyolult helyzeteiben. Isten szeretete az, ami erőt ad nekem arra, hogy mások szívét is boldoggá tegyem. Isten iránti szeretetem az, ami az alapja minden szolgálatomnak másokért. Időt, munkát, anyagi javainkból áldozni a templomért, mások életét pozitívan befolyásolja, ami által épül Isten országa. Számomra nem álom, hanem valóság az a világ, ahol minden szép és jó egyesül és legyőzi a gonoszt, amikor mindenki a Jézus Krisztust keresi, megtalálja és követi a Szentlélek által.
