An independent Catholic media research website claims that there are 8050 recognized saints in the Roman Catholic Church. The list includes popes who lived and maintained an extravagant life, founding church fathers, apostles, and martyrs, defenders of the Christian faith and servants with extraordinary conviction of living a simple, loving life. In the Reformed tradition we do not believe in the power of man canonizing people to sainthood, yet in our most treasured Apostle’s Creed we confess that we believe “in the communion of saints”. I often being asked, what is this mean? The answers can be found in our faith confession, the Heidelberg Catechism (#55) and also in the first letter of the Apostle Paul to the Corinthians (1:1-3), but in a nutshell it means that we have a rich history with the loving God. It ensures us that our earthly days are finite, but our lives have a promise in the presence of all who are received by God. It means, our creator, God, who is the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit in one person since the beginning of times nourishes, protects and loves us and all people who had faith in him through Jesus Christ entered his kingdom to be in the presence of all the saints. The dwelling place of God is a family of all faithful, loving people of God. The community of saints includes our forefathers, us, our children and their children if they maintain their faith in God through Jesus Christ. They share the gifts of God and they maintain the pureness of God’s tender care for all.
